Wasting Money

If its one thing I have learned from the airlines the pass year, is that the last I need is having extra fees tacked into my bill.

While we may have little choice than to pay airline fees, there are many other fees we get stuck with on a regular basis. They can be easily be avoided, if we look out for them.

Here are list of fees I put together that we waste money on;

  • If you are thinking of calling 411 and asking for assistance, wait, put down the phone and read this first. Carriers may charge you $1.25 every time you make a call with this number, instead, use 1-800-FREE-411 or 1-GOOG-411. It may be some extra digits but it will save you money.
  • Well we all know this too well, it may be difficult to turn down a store credit card, when the sales person forcing them in your face before check-out, with promise of a discount. However, these cards have two potential drawbacks. First, though they may have low interest rate at the beginning, it will rise to as much as 20% or more if you are late making payment. On top of that, just by applying for new card, you may lower your current card score.
  • When consumers take out money from the ATMs they are not affiliated with their bank they may be subject to an extra fee, ranging from $1- $4. These fees increase by 7% a year, so the problem only gets worse. If you are running low on cash and new more, you may want to consider asking for a cash back from a retailer or visiting a bank that will reimburse you for your ATM charges. If you have a smartphone, there are several apps that can help you locate nearby ATM that won't charge you an extra fee.
  • Try to be diligent when it comes to credit card statements and late fee. Late fee has now been capped at $25 which is less than it used to be but is still a lot of money to be paying for simply forgetting to pay a bill.
  • You should know better, when car dealerships keep encouraging you to keep bringing your car for repairs and maintenance even after the warranty runs out. Car dealerships are most likely to over charge and and are less likely negotiate a better price than repair shops.

  • Airlines has an excusable amount of fee on everything from leg room to pillows. But as bad as these fees are the pale in comparison with the fees one incur from canceling a flight. Several airlines charge as much as $100 to cancel or change a flight. Fortunately for us the consumer, there are a growing movement of consumer advocates looking to eliminate this and other fees.
  • 18% of American don't know they are subject to early termination fees when they get out of their cell phone contract before its term expire, but this may seem as common knowledge. This is a costly issue, given that companies such as AT&T charge as much as $350 if you cancel your cell phone plan early.
  • As it is with a cell phone plan, it is costly as well to switch cable providers in the middle of a contract. Make sure to ask your cable provider about this cost and factor in before you make any decisions about switching providers or upgrading.
  • Make sure you call your cell phone service provider to make sure you are not charge outlandish roaming fees when making a call on your phone before you take your vacation. Some carriers charge as much as $2 per minute for roaming charges, if you decided to send a voicemail or video message, the fees may be even higher. If you have a smartphone that can download apps, download Skype or Google voice which let you make free or discounted domestic or international phone calls.
  • While rewards annual cards maybe tempting, check before sign up that to see if the card has any annual fee. if is does, you may want to think twice before signing up and get one that does not have annual fees. I will recommend capital One No Hassle Miles Rewards card and Chase Sapphire card.
