When you go to see your doctor they should ask you what are you risk factors, after assessing what diseases you are at risk for you will then be tested for this. Anyone with a new partner or multiple partners should be screen, but testing is done at your doctor discretion.
In absence of symptoms other people are not screen for syphilis because of false positives, if you know you are at risk for a disease you need to speak up, the best way to help yourself is to ask questions. Some symptoms of STD includes, discharge from penis or vagina, sores on genitals, itching and burning during urination. Remember many infections do not have any symptoms, so you may have an infection and never know it. Many people spread infections to their sexual partners without knowing it. Getting tested can put your mind at ease and get you much needed help, Its important to learn of ways to have safer sex in the future for you and your partner.

Its important for you to ask your health care provider for STD testing, do not assume you will get tested once you exam by your doctor for another reason, example, when a woman has a pap smear or a man having a physical. Your health care provider will help you decide if you need STD testing. just ask.
Which STD test do i need? Well there is no one test for Sexually Transmitted Disease-test are specific for each infections, and some infections can be found during different kinds of sex.
You and your health care provider will decide which test are best for you. First your health care provider will ask you some questions to determine which test are you. Questions includes:
- your sexual practices
- whether you have symptoms- if you have any describe them.
- whether you ever had STDs
- whether you had any symptoms in the past
- whether you used over the counter medication to treat any symptoms
- allergies if you have any
- your last period- if you are a woman- if you could be pregnant.
Remember its important to be honest and open with your health care provider, to get the best of care.
How are STD test done? It depends on what infection you have, STD is tested in more than one way, which includes;
- Physical exams- your health care provider may look at your pelvic, penis or anus for any rash, warts, sores and discharge. For a woman it is similar to a pelvic exam.
- Blood sample- your health care provider may take blood sample from you by either pricking your finger or with a needle.
- Urine sample- you will have to some urine in a cup
- Discharge, tissue, cells or saliva.
