Dried Fruit

You can save some money on dried fruits, rather than buying it at the supermarket or the grocery store, you can dry fruits yourself, with only couple easy steps. Drying fruits at home not only save you money but you will know what is being put into it.

Here are is what you will need to get and do, in order to dry your fruits properly. I do this every month for my son to eat, he is a picky eater and would not eat the ones I buy, so I had to make my own.

Fruits which may be used are:

  • Five finger, which is also called Carambola. The fruit as well as the plant can be found at Amazon. I normally use Carambola dried fruit to make fruit cake as well as put in black cake, it taste delicious and smells great.
  • Gooseberries
  • Dunks- this is commonly pronounced as "dungs". It is a 1 1/2 inch berry like fruit, with one seed, it has a crunchy flesh and taste a bit sour when green and sweet when ripe. It is green when unripe and yellow when ripe. There isn't an alternative for this fruit, so if you don't have not to sweat.
  • Malacca pears
  • Guava

Ingredients

Have equal weight of sugar and fruits

Directions

  • Put half pint of water and half of the sugar into a pan to each pound of sugar. Boil this mixture to a thin syrup.
  • If any stalks and bruised are on the fruits, remove it. Add syrup to fruit, simmer until the fruit is half cooked.
  • Place in earthenware or China bowl, when it is cool, cover and leave until the nest day. This allow the sugar to absorbed into the fruit.
  • Strain the sugar from the bowl into a preserving pan and add the rest of the sugar.
  • Boil until thickens.
  • Allow it to cool slightly then add fruits and simmer until tender.
  • Remove fruits carefully and then placed onto a deep dish. Strain the syrup over the fruit.
  • Cool the fruit and leave for 48 hours.
  • Spread it out in a single layer and leave to dry, this can be done in an oven (turned off) or in the sun.
  • When it is thoroughly dry, packed in air tight jars.

Note: Each fruit must be process separately. Fruits much be in good condition, not too green or too ripened.
